United Kingdom - A woman
tried to sue her former lawyers
for professional negligence.
She claims they had failed to
properly explain to her that
getting a divorce would mean
putting an end to her
marriage.
Jane Mulcahy, a Roman Catholic,
argued that the lawyers failed to
take into account her faith and
should have recommended
judicial separation - a step away
from full divorce - as an
alternative course of action.
Her claims, made against two
separate firms of solicitors, had
already been rejected by the
court, while the presiding judge
described the allegations as
"striking".
Legal separation (known also as
"judicial separation," "separate
maintenance," "divorce a mensa
et thoro," or "divorce from bed-
and-board") is a legal process by
which a married couple may
formalize a de facto separation
while remaining legally married.
Other nost recent curious
divorce cases include
a woman who divorced her
husband because he preferred
to use bread, rather than a fork,
to eat peas;
a woman who divorced her
husband because he would
always squeezed the toothpaste
tube in the middle and not the
end;
a woman who divorced her
husband on their wedding day
because he had not made the
costly arrangements that she
had asked for.
